In line with the revolutionary vision of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto to spread the net of basic facilities to each and every doorstep, the Sindh government, on Monday, conducted a trial run of a new phenomenal bus service in the provincial capital Karachi with a fleet comprising “completely of environment-friendly” electric vehicles. As per the brief details shared with regard to this new initiative on social media, “Transport department government of Sindh is (starting) New Bus service in Karachi. These are Pakistan’s first electrical vehicles, which are completely environment friendly.”
As many as 50 electric buses have reached Karachi in what can truly be called the first step toward the realisation of the ruling Pakistan Peoples’ Party’s long-held goal of resolving the transportation miseries of the common man The routes for these buses would be finalised in the upcoming days after the culmination of their test run but the fact that Sindh has become the first province to embrace cutting-edge technology while acting in solidarity with the environment is enough to check many boxes on the pro-people agenda. Under the guidance of the PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and his entire machinery has dedicated themselves to reducing the carbon footprint, especially in the wake of the debilitating floods. However, trying to be green should not come as a sign to become complacent. The transport department is already busy finalising plans to make around 100 electric buses operational by the end of this year while the private sector has been roped in to make this initiative a mega-success.
